Considerations before purchasing a hot tub:
Electrical permits are required and will be pulled by a certified electrician. However, the City of Winnipeg will not issue the electrical permit to the electrician until the building permit has been applied for and issued. Yes a building permit is required for a hot tub installation. City of Winnipeg Pools and Hot Tubs/Spas Construction Information
Spa packs (disconnect within site of the hot tub and at least 10t away) are sometimes included in the purchase of the hot tub from the company that you purchased the tub from. However, they are not always included with your hot tub and can range from $150-$250. Availability can be an issue.
The spa pack has to go at least 10ft away from the tub and has to be within site of at least one “seat” in the tub. There is an exception that can be made to move this disconnect between 5-10ft of the tub but would need to be discussed if your set up CANNOT accommodate this disconnect at least 10ft away.
No electrical (lights or plugs) can be within 5ft of the tub. If there is electrical between 5-10ft of the tub it has to be GFCI protected from the source. This includes all lights and plugs on the house, as well as any temporary lighting that may be strung around the area.
If the tub is located more than 1.5ft from the house or a deck then the wiring connecting the tub either has to be mechanically protected with lumber or similar material or would need to be trenched down to a minimum of 18″ AND inspected before covering.
